Spare Times for July 3-9

Macy’s Fourth of July Fireworks (Saturday) This corporate-sponsored display of patriotism sparkles above the East River for a second year since its return from the Hudson. It begins around 9:20 p.m., with fireworks barges set up at the Brooklyn Bridge and between 23rd and 34th Streets in Manhattan.

Many restaurants and party venues are hosting ticketed events, but there are plenty of free vantage points, including elevated sections of Franklin D. Roosevelt Drive, with entry points along the waterfront. Parks fill up fast, so it’s best to arrive early.

For those who can’t make it, or who don’t feel like waiting outside for hours, the festivities will be broadcast on NBC starting at 8 p.m. On the program are musical performances by Dierks Bentley, Kelly Clarkson, Meghan Trainor and more, including a premiere of Gloria Estefan’s song “America.” More information is at social.macys.com/fireworks.
